Balance – An individual pursuit

the importance of balance

Soup – Simple on the surface but when you delve deeper you begin understand the complexities. By identifing the individual ingredients you realise just how delicate the balance is between each one. How adding or taking away can shift the flavour.

Don’t worry I’m not about to release another cookbook. Although it is in the works and you still can get the Sweet Treats one (shameless plug)

But it is an analogy I sometimes use to help students that get a little stuck…

Balance is a fundamental element of all disciplines.

When I ask students to describe what balance means to them the first thing they talk about is the physical element. Both of themselves as a rider and the horse. But balance is not physical alone. There is also emotional and mental balance.

All three of these ingredients need to be in harmony and interact with each other in order for the relationship to be at its best.

Just as soup can either be delicious or unpalatable when the balance of ingredients is off, so can our relationships with our horses. Don’t overlook the subtle differences the emotional and mental balance can have. The whole will never be as good as it could be.

In other words the physical is the first ingredient we taste. Yet the emotional and mental are the seasoning. Without one or the other it doesn’t work.

Here is the curve ball, yes there is always one…

Just as balance in our own lives looks different from one to another, balance in horses is also individual. There is no getting around this.

Each one on the surface my look the same but the balance of their ingredients will be different. Personality, breeding, experiences, training, all impact.

Realising that the harmony of elements needs carefull consideration allows us to see our horses as individuals.

Don’t be afraid to experiment if it is not working. Think outside the box. Different soups need different balances and sometimes it takes trial and error, sometimes many errors, until we get it right.

Michelin stars are not achieved by opening a can!

Separation Anxiety

Smile and your Horse smiles with you…

It is the call I make most often to my students ‘Don’t forget to Smile’. I get that sometimes it is not always the easiest thing to do, especially if you are concentrating or nervous. But I guarantee if you can smile, what you are concentrating on will become easier and the nerves will dilute.
