How our lockdown can be an amazing learning experience. Giving us time for reflection and connection

I hear the phrase from time to time ‘I can’t wait to get back to normal’. I have to be honest it is a phrase that actually fills me with a sense of dread. I have come to see the situation we find ourselves in as a potential opportunity to reflect on our lives. The loss of the normality that brought us comfort, a new simpler, slower and smaller way of being could arise.

It has taken me a while to arrive here.

So how do these thoughts relate to our relationship with our horses

The most obvious is connection. We are experiencing a disconnect, from friends, family, work and routine. Living with restrictions of movement within our inner circle and wider communities. The closeness of our relationships are being challenged. We can use this to better understand the needs of our horses.

All of this change is impacting on our physical state, our mental health and emotional well being. All of this impacts on how we connect with each other, our environment and equally importantly ourselves.

We are experiencing a fundamental reduction of choice. Sometimes we are angry, sometimes frustrated,  sometimes anxious, and sometimes shutdown. The times we feel better and more like ourselves is when we understand the why which leads to confidence and growth. Which leads to connection.

This is how we want our horses to feel. Together we can create an atmosphere where our horses can tap into their inner confidence and grow. By giving them the environment to strive, both physical and emotional balance can be achieved. A balanced horse will be open to send and receive. A balanced relationship is one where both parties can reconnect.

So in these days of disconnect find moments no matter how small to reconnect. Whether that is with your horses if you are lucky to be able to have them close but also with yourself… it starts with you and from there all things will bloom.

Thanks for listening.

Separation Anxiety

separation anxiety is not something to punish but it is something to work through with them. There’s nothing gained just separating the horse that is anxious and leaving them to work it out on their own.
